3- Caught-In/Between: Identifying "Pinch Points" on Conveyors and Rigs (OGM)

Description
Course Overview

Caught-In/Between: Identifying “Pinch Points” on Conveyors and Rigs is a practical, safety-focused online training designed to help workers recognize, assess, and control caught-in/between hazards in industrial environments. These hazards are among the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in construction, oil & gas, mining, marine, and manufacturing operations.

Through real-world examples, visual demonstrations, and interactive hazard recognition exercises, learners will gain the skills needed to identify “pinch points” on conveyor systems, drilling rigs, rotating equipment, and material handling machinery. The course emphasizes hazard awareness, safe work practices, lockout/tagout (LOTO), guarding requirements, communication protocols, and job safety analysis (JSA) techniques.

By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to proactively recognize hazardous energy sources, understand where caught-in/between risks are most likely to occur, and apply effective control measures to prevent injuries.

Target Audience

Construction workers

Oil & gas personnel (rig crews, floorhands, roustabouts)

Maintenance and mechanical technicians

Conveyor system operators

Supervisors and safety professionals

Equipment operators

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

Define caught-in/between hazards and explain how pinch points develop in conveyor systems and rig operations.

Identify common pinch point locations on:

Conveyor belts and rollers

Drive assemblies and pulleys

Chain and sprocket systems

Drill floors and rotary tables

Hoisting and rigging equipment

Recognize hazardous energy sources, including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and gravitational forces.

Analyze real-world scenarios to determine where caught-in/between incidents are most likely to occur.

Apply hazard control measures, including:

Machine guarding principles

Safe work positioning

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures

Communication and exclusion zones

Conduct a basic Job Safety Analysis (JSA) focused on identifying and mitigating pinch point risks.

Demonstrate safe behaviors and decision-making when working near moving equipment or suspended loads.

Understand regulatory and company compliance requirements related to machine guarding and worker protection.
